为了纪念发现和开拓新加坡的莱佛士爵士，殖民地政府于1887年在市政厅前方的空地上置立了以青铜打造的莱佛士塑像，此雕像在上个世纪被迁移到较为显眼的皇后坊维多利亚纪念堂和维多利亚剧院前方的空地上。在这两座具有百多年历史的富丽堂皇欧陆式建筑物的后方河岸边缘另有一尊1972年采用纯白色花岗岩雕琢而成的莱佛士雕像，此处正是莱佛士1819年1月28日首次踏足新加坡的登陆点，的的确确是再也没有比这里更适当竖立其雕像的地点啦！

In honor of Sir Stamford Raffles, who discovered and developed Singapore, the colonial government erected a bronze statue of Stamford Raffles in the open space in front of City Hall in 1887, the statue was later moved in the last century to a more prominent location at the open space in Empress Place in front of the Victoria Theatre and Victoria Memorial Hall. On the fringe of the riverbank behind these two blocks of hundred years old palatial continental architectures, is another statue of Stamford Raffles carved from white granite in 1972, which was exactly on the landing point where Raffles first set foot in Singapore on 28 January 1819, the erection of his statue here is indeed a very appropriate move.
