大红花不但花朵大而且形态漂亮色彩又鲜艳，是长年四季花儿皆盛开的一种常绿灌木，可谓锦葵科木槿属中的上品也。大红花品种繁多，全世界共有三千多个品种，分布于热带和亚热带地区；盛产于中国南方，由于花色大多数是靓丽的红色因而有“大红花”的俗称，原名朱槿，又名扶桑，学名为【中国玫瑰】。
欧洲人十七世纪时航海至中国，首遇陌生的复瓣朱槿花，自然而然地从复瓣花型外观酷似玫瑰的漂亮长相上得到灵感而将之命名为【中国玫瑰】（rosa-sinensis）。这就是朱槿的学名有中国玫瑰之称的由来，拉丁文的“sinensis”指的就是“中国”。随着复瓣中国朱槿流传到欧洲之后，单瓣的大红花也陆陆续续散播至欧洲各地。
明朝年间各类朱槿开始从中国流传到南洋，漂亮的大红花在东南亚半岛与其周边的群岛上处处盛开，给地属热带的东南亚增添了灿烂的景色，风景随而倍加绮丽。1963 年鲜红单瓣的大红花脱颖而出成功被选为马来西亚的国花，象征着人民一心一意爱国的热诚情怀。

There are more than three thousand varieties of Hibiscus in the world growing in tropical and subtropical regions.
A great number of Hibiscus are grown in China and most of the flowers are in beautiful red colour, hence, it is commonly known as the “Big Red Flower” in Chinese.
The Europeans named the hibiscus flowers as "Rosa Sinensis" in the seventeenth century when they first encountered with the compound-petal hibiscus flowers that look like roses. In Latin language "Sinensis" means "China". So Hibiscus is “Rose of China”.
During the Ming Dynasty, Hibiscus began to spread into the Southeast Asian Peninsula and its surrounding archipelagos, since then the region was scenically enhanced with vibrant colours. In 1963, the single-layer-petal Hibiscus in striking red colour officially became the national flower of Malaysia, symbolizing the people's dedicated patriotic enthusiasm.
There are numerous sensual poems and beautiful paintings praising and portraying the vivid Hibiscus flowers because they were appreciated by many artists and literati since the ancient days.
